How to Make Hydraulic Systems Operate More Efficiently and Last Longer — From the Onset
Efficient and robust, hydraulic systems power Australian’s farming industry today. They can provide constant torque or force regardless of speed changes, making it easy for tractors, mowers, hay balers and utility vehicles to handle heavy loads.
Like any technology, however, any hydraulic design still has a room for improvement. Here are a few manufacturing optimisations to help enhance the performance and lifespan of hydraulic machinery:
Prevent fluid contamination during manufacturing
One of the greatest causes of poor hydraulic performance is fluid contamination. It can cause the system to work much less efficiently or even fail suddenly — either can have a huge financial impact on farmers.
Fluid contamination can occur during equipment operations or even the manufacturing phase. If you’re an OEM, you can prevent it by paying attention when storing, handling or transporting hydraulic components, including oils. Before introducing fluids to the system, check if they are free of debris. Also, keep the outside of oil barrels and reservoirs clean to keep dust and dirt from contaminating the oil as you store it.
Consider the humidity conditions at the site of application
For locations in Northern Australia and other sites where the average humidity is high, mandate the use of moisture-absorbing tank breathers. If possible, throw in polymeric filters, as well. Through these additional components, you can help ensure water in the system isn’t more than the oil’s saturation level. Excessive moisture or water in hydraulic fluid can react with some additives, leaving critical surfaces vulnerable to wear and corrosion.
Select proper, robust hydraulic hoses
When a hydraulic hose of a tractor or mower fails without warning, it disrupts a critical function on the farm. Any leakage can also mean massive repair costs and be a safety hazard to farmers or machine operators.
Prevent hose malfunction from the onset by selecting a hose that isn’t only robust but also matches the intended hydraulic machine application. Depending on the application, you need to consider the best hose material, correct pressure rating and the suitable hose’s length and inside diameter size.
An inside diameter that is too small for a given flow rate can increase the system’s linear velocity. This causes friction and turbulence that, when combined, can result in higher system heat and pressure.
Choose a reliable supplier as every hydraulic component matters
While small in size, hydraulic fittings, clamps and adaptors play a huge part in ensuring the efficiency of a hydraulic machine. These components should be tested for corrosion resistance and pressure sealing. Partner with a supplier that puts hydraulic components under rigorous testing and delivers them on time, every time. Assure a steady supply of components that can hold up to any application.
If you’re an OEM that requires custom fittings and hose assemblies, work with a supplier that can collaborate with product designers and engineers who can develop quality customised components.
