3 Factors to Consider When Selecting the Right Hydraulic Cylinder

Date: 26-03-2020

Hydraulic cylinders are at the core of many modern-day machines. Whether you're in the agricultural sector, mining or construction as well as many others, fluid power systems mechanise small or large-scale tasks. What you'll need will primarily depend on what industry you're in and what tasks the cylinders will help achieve.

The Industry Where You Operate

For agricultural applications, hydraulic systems are essentially indispensable. Mechanised harvesters, slashers, mowers and spraying equipment use hydraulic movement to cover huge plots of land efficiently.

For the earthmoving industry, there are machines built to withstand punishing work conditions. Excavator buckets, skid steers, and road surfacing equipment have hydraulic systems that can survive under tremendous pressure. There are also less intensive applications under general industry. Forklifts, post hole diggers, and elevated working platforms can incorporate hydraulic systems.

Each industry imposes different operating conditions. You need to consider a variety of variables including space requirements, pressure in terms of psi, temperature, humidity and saltwater exposure.

The Exact Hydraulic Cylinder Type

Since there are different types of hydraulic cylinders out there, selecting the right one can be easier if you talk with your potential hydraulic cylinder distributor and see the options they can provide. Some of the common types of hydraulic cylinders are:

  • Welded hydraulic cylinder - compact and light, welded cylinders are often applied in mobile machines. The end flanges are welded directly to the cylinder barrel.
  • Tie-rod hydraulic cylinder – is usually for heavy-duty use in manufacturing and agricultural operations. The end caps and the cylinder barrel are melded together by a rod that goes through the end cap holes.
  • Telescoping cylinder – several tube-shaped sections are joined together to form telescoping cylinders. The design allows this type to change sizes, from long overall cylinders to small ones – allowing for greater versatility.

Cylinder Action: Push or Pull?

Depending on the use you have in mind, your options are the following:

  • Single-Acting or Pull Cylinder – A single-acting piston enables a hydraulic cylinder to have an operating stroke that is one-directional. This cylinder uses either the load, spring or other external force to move the piston in one direction.
  • Double-Acting Cylinder– Utilises fluid on both sides of the piston to enable either a retraction or extension. This is ideal if you need the hydraulic system to do more than just one action.

You'll need to measure your rod diameter correctly to avoid rod buckling for a push action cylinder. For a pull action, examining the annulus area and finding the exact size is key in order to move loads at the optimal pressure.
