Buyer’s Guide: Choosing the Right Hydraulic Cylinder for the Job
Hydraulic cylinders are actuators that harness fluid pressure to generate motion and force. They work well for automobiles and earthmoving equipment, such as mining trucks and excavators, making lifting, pushing, steering or moving heavy loads easier and more convenient.
Available in a wide array of types and sizes, which one is right for your build? We’re here to help you choose the right hydraulic cylinder in Australia. With this quick guide, you can build better hydraulic machines that offer maximum performance and reliability.
Decide between tie-rod and welded cylinders
For industrial applications, there are two major hydraulic cylinder categories: tie-rod and welded. Tie-rod cylinders feature threaded steel tie rods on their housing. These tie rods offer extra strength and stability to the cylinders, but they tend to be limited to 20.68 MPa. Welded cylinders, on the other hand, are designed to handle higher pressures. They have heavy-duty housing that includes a barrel welded directly to the end caps.
Welded cylinders are a better option than tie-rod types for more-rugged applications, such as steel mills and offshore sites where the environment is harsh and temperature swings are wide.
Select the proper mounting ;
The choice of mounting depends on whether the cylinder body pivots or is stationary. If your machine build requires cylinders to be stationary, select fixed mounts on the centreline of the cylinder. These allow for straight-line force transfer and cause minimal wear. Consider flange fixed mounts. Whether rectangular or round, flanges ensure loads are centred on the cylinder and opposing forces are balanced. Another fixed mount option is a lug mount, but it usually requires dowel pins to keep the lug/s from moving at higher pressures.
If the cylinder moves, choose pivot mounts. These mounts absorb force on the centreline while allowing the cylinder to change its alignment. Examples of such mounts include clevis and trunnion mounts. Clevis mounts are suitable for short strokes and small to medium-bore cylinders. Trunnion mounts are available in head, mid and rear-mount versions and are open for customisation or specific mounting.
Consider the environmental and operating demands
Cylinder type, mount and parameters like stroke and force must match machine requirements. Besides these, environmental and operating demands should influence your purchase decision.
The material and finishes of the hydraulic cylinder can be modified to meet specific operating conditions. For instance, cylinder finishes can include special metal plating or paint to suit outdoor applications. Seals can be changed to match the hydraulic fluid the machine will use. With proper seal materials, you can reduce friction and wear and even increase the service life of your machine — and go beyond the expectation of your customers.
These are just some basic considerations you need to remember when getting a supply of hydraulic cylinders for your machine build. For further assistance, don’t hesitate to get in touch.
