Hydraulic Needle Valves
Hydraulic Needle Valves
Usually, when someone asks if a valve is open or closed, they’re not really that interested in the orientation of the valve but what they really want to know is, is there flow passing through?
This time we introduce you to our hydraulic needle valve.
So what exactly is a needle valve? This genius creation is commonly used to control flow and protect delicate gauges from damage caused by sudden pressure surges of liquids and gases. They're ideal for systems using lighter and less viscous materials with low flow rates.
Sometimes referred to as plunger valves, needle valves are regulating and enable engineers to finely control and regulate water flow and pressure. They are similar in design and operation to the globe valve. Instead of a disk, a needle valve has a long tapered point at the end of the valve stem.
The design intent of this kind of valve allows pressure to be added/relieved in very small increments. Needle valves are invaluable for many systems and machines, as they help to maintain these and prevent significant damage. The main advantage being that higher accuracy of flow control is possible given the very low rate of these increments.
The distinguishing characteristic of a needle valve is the long, tapered, needlelike point on the end of the valve stem. This NEEDLE acts as a disk. The longer part of the needle is smaller than the orifice in the valve seat and passes through the orifice before the needle seats.
It is not always possible to visually see if the flow is passing through a needle valve, particularly with closed systems. This is where either external or inline flow meters can be installed and used to assess if the flow is passing through and at what rate. Ask when you’re ordering your valves if this is a requirement.
